This world-famous surrealist artist produced lots of interesting work between 1923 and 1981. Dalì was largely inspired by the literary work that he illustrated: Alice in Wonderland, Dr Faust, The Divine Comedy, the Bible, the Loves of Cassandra and Hamlet are just a few examples.
Various symbols and local or current events have given him inspiration to work on topics like mythological symbolism, hippies or even bullfights.
But often the inspiration came from within; the world of his boundless imagination provided him with motives like strange landscapes with melting watches, women with drawers, long-legged elephants. These expressions betrayed the artistic fantasies and dream world of their maker.
